Trump Shares AI-Edited White House Photo Highlighting Renovations

President Donald Trump shared images of a fully renovated White House facade on Truth Social, but an accompanying photo of a restored column was flagged by Google’s AI detector as created or edited with OpenAI.

President Donald Trump released photographs of the South side of the White House on Truth Social, highlighting exterior restoration alongside a new South Entrance and heliport. Trump shared images of what he described as the fully renovated White House facade, stating that extensive restoration work would give the historic building decades of additional life. These improvements take place against the backdrop of a wider overhaul of the executive mansion grounds throughout Trump’s second term, featuring updates to the Rose Garden, ongoing building efforts on the North Portico, and substantial construction where the former East Wing once stood. Built originally in the 1820s while James Monroe served as president, the South Portico was followed several years later by the addition of the North Portico under Andrew Jackson. Furthermore, the West Wing was built during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency in 1902, and a near-total interior reconstruction occurred under Harry Truman between 1948 and 1952.

Truth Social Photos Reveal AI-Edited Column Discrepancies

While the president posted a series of images showing off renovations, one of them appeared to be modified with artificial intelligence. The picture compared an old White House column to a restored version, displaying several discrepancies that led to it being flagged by Google’s AI detector as made or edited with OpenAI. Additionally, the before and after photos appeared nearly identical in angle and detail, with nearly the same window reflections and protective cardboard positioned in the exact same spot at the bottom of the column. The newly painted structure also appeared unnaturally smooth. Testing confirmed that the photo posted to Truth Social triggers Google’s SynthID Detector, which searches images, videos, and audio for invisible watermarks indicating the content was created or edited using AI.

East Wing Ballroom Construction and Project Timeline

The facade restoration forms part of a series of changes made to the White House and its grounds, with the ballroom and associated East Wing redevelopment standing out as significant. The original East Wing was demolished as the administration moved forward with plans for a large new ceremonial space, alongside additional security and military infrastructure. Trump initially promoted the ballroom as a privately funded addition intended to provide the White House with a permanent location for large state events rather than relying on temporary tents, while the White House noted that taxpayer-funded costs relate specifically to security and other official functions rather than the ballroom itself. Addressing the timeline, Trump reiterated that the work remained on schedule, writing that the ballroom and military complex are both on time and on budget. He additionally described the development as the most significant addition to the White House since the West Wing was constructed.
