President Donald Trump announced Monday he will personally fund campaign-style advertisements praising his administration using money raised by his political action committee, MAGA Inc., ending a bipartisan backlash over the use of federal taxpayer funds for the televised promotional spots ahead of the November midterm elections.
Federal ad-tracking firm AdImpact estimated that the government had spent at least $10 million to air the spots across national and local television networks, including during prime-time slots. The commercials featured Trump warning against communism, highlighting past speeches, and displaying a disclaimer reading Paid for by the U.S. government
(according to analysis by advertising tracking firm AdImpact). The decision to route federal money toward political messaging ignited immediate friction across Capitol Hill, drawing rare cross-party rebukes from lawmakers questioning the legality of the expenditure.
Bipartisan Opposition and Legal Scrutiny Erupt Over Federal Ad Spending
Senate Majority Leader John Thune criticized the funding mechanism while addressing reporters, stating I like the message, but it shouldn’t be paid for by taxpayer dollars,
(as Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters on Capitol Hill). Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer denounced the campaign on the Senate floor as pure propaganda,
(as Schumer said Tuesday on the Senate floor) asserting that the president was utilizing citizen tax dollars to bankroll political commercials. Democratic senators Patty Murray and Chris Murphy pointed out that the Department of Homeland Security appeared to have dedicated $20 million from Customs and Border Protection funds to support the media campaign (Democratic Senators Patty Murray of Washington and Chris Murphy of Connecticut have said).
Democratic members of Congress pressed the government for accountability over the contracting decisions.
Trump Pays for Ads with MAGA Inc Funds
A White House spokesperson asserted that the announcements were very clearly not campaign ads
(the White House said in a previous statement).

“The Radical Left is upset with the fact that I am taking Ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our Great U.S.A., and paying for them with U.S.A. money. This is a rather standard thing to do but, rather than doing that, although nothing will make them happy, I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc.”

MAGA Inc Holds over 415 Million Dollars
Federal Election Commission disclosures show that MAGA Inc., Trump’s primary political action committee, maintained more than $415.8 million in cash on hand at the end of August, having raised $424.4 million and spent $32.4 million during the 2025–26 cycle (according to its latest Federal Election Commission filing).
Federal watchdogs continue to review whether the initial contracting decisions complied with statutory appropriations limits.
