Judge Aileen Cannon ruled it. It is a compromise between the request of prosecutors and defense lawyers to set it after the 2024 presidential election

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
NEW YORK – Donald Trump’s federal trial over seized classified documents at Mar-a-Lago will begin May 20, 2024, by which time most Republican voters will have voted in the primary and the former president may already be the party’s nominee.

It will last two weeks and will be held in Florida.

Judge Aileen Cannon (Who the decision ) seems to have chosen a compromise between special prosecutor Jack Smith’s request for a date in December 2023 and Trump’s own request that he wanted to postpone the trial until after the presidential elections in November 2024.

Before Florida, Trump will have to appear in New York next March, for the trial related to the charge of falsifying documents on the payment of porn star Stormy Daniels on the eve of the 2016 presidential election.

There could also be a civil lawsuit on Jan. 15, 2024 in the case of E Jean Carroll, in which Trump has already been convicted of sexual assault: It would be the same day as the Iowa caucuses, the nation’s first Republican primary, but he’s not expected to appear in person (he’s trying to move that, too).

Not to mention the imminent decision on a possible indictment also in Georgia, for electoral interference in 2020.

For the classified documents proceeding, Trump’s attorneys say he can’t get a fair trial while he runs for president, because the Justice Department from which the indictment starts is tied to his rival in the election, President Joe Biden. For this reason, Justice Minister Merrick Garland had appointed a special prosecutor, Jack Smith, to whom he had delegated the decision on the indictment, but this still does not convince Trump’s supporters.

His lawyers’ other argument is that campaigning requires so much energy and so much time that having to defend himself in court would put him at a disadvantage. The judge stated that she was not convinced by the latter argument.
