Donald Trump trial will be held on May 24, 2024

Donald Trump, former president of the United States, will be tried on May 24, 2024 in the context of the case of secret documents hidden in his residence. The date was set by the US court this Friday (21).

The trial of the politician affiliated with the Republican Party will take place less than six months before the presidential elections in the United States, which are scheduled to take place in November of next year.

As a result, Trump’s defense had postponed the hearing to December 2024, that is, after the North American electoral process. The attempt, however, was unsuccessful.

Donald Trump is the favorite to face Joe Biden in next year’s election. He, however, must go through the Republican party primaries, where he will meet his main political opponents, such as Mike Pence and Ron DeSantis.

After defining the date by Aileen Cannon, the Florida district judge responsible for the case, it means that both the trial and the presidential campaign will take place at the same time. The hearing will take place at the Fort Pierce courthouse.

Accusations against Trump

Among the 37 criminal charges over secret documents found at his home in Mar-a-Lago in August 2022, 31 are about violations of the espionage law, for keeping confidential documents about the country’s sovereignty and defense, with data about the US nuclear arsenal and weaknesses that the US presents in case it was an invasion.

Three other counts are for Trump allegedly keeping or concealing documents that are part of a federal investigative work and two more counts refer to false statements and speeches in court. Another accusation was due to a conspiracy and attempt to obstruct the action of Justice.
