The notification came from the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith, according to The New York Times, CNN and other media outlets. That’s the clearest indication yet that prosecutors are closing in on a charge against the former president, who already faces charges in another case.
The Times, citing “two people familiar with the case”, reported that it was unclear when Trump’s staff was informed that he was the subject of the investigation.
A special counsel appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland has been investigating a set of classified documents that Trump had stored at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, residence after leaving the White House.
The FBI seized about 11,000 pages in August while executing a search warrant, and Trump could face obstruction of justice charges after months of resisting the documents’ recovery.
“Nobody told me I’m being accused, and I shouldn’t be, because I’ve done NOTHING wrong,” Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social, on Wednesday in response to the media reports.
On Monday, US media outlets also reported that Trump’s lawyers, John Rowley, James Trusty and Lindsey Halligan, met with Justice Department prosecutors.
