Retiring the ‘People Movers’ and Expanding Airport Infrastructure
A central feature of the administration’s plan is the elimination of the airport’s polarizing “people movers”—the mobile lounges designed by Chrysler Corp. that have shuttled travelers between the main terminal and aircraft since the airport opened in 1962, as detailed by AP News. The airport currently operates a fleet of 19 mobile lounges, each capable of carrying up to 102 passengers, but the system has drawn sharp criticism from travelers and officials alike. Dislike for the vehicles intensified following a November crash involving one of the mobile lounges that sent 18 people to the hospital, according to AP News.
According to CBS News, the overhaul will add or renovate more than 5 million square feet of space, replace the current “C” and “D” concourses, build a 32,000-space parking garage closer to the terminal, and install a central walking tunnel along with expanded AeroTrain connections. Additional improvements include modern check-in areas, more efficient security screening, new restaurants and shops, hotels, a larger U.S. Customs area, and a massive United Polaris lounge, as reported by CBS News and NBC4 Washington. Financing, Airline Collaboration, and Next Steps
The project price tag sits above $20 billion, representing a significant increase from the $7 billion originally allocated toward the upgrade, according to NBC4 Washington. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy explained that the undertaking will be bonded for $22.5 billion and paid for by United Airlines—which maintains a major hub at Dulles—and other airlines, as noted by CBS News.
