In the US state of Arizona, an abortion law from 1864 has been in force again for a few days. US Vice President Harris says this is Trump’s vision for America.

US Vice President Kamala Harris has accused Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump of wanting to throw the US back into the 19th century on abortion rights if he wins the election.

A few days after Arizona banned virtually all abortions, Harris warned at an appearance in the state on Friday that the right-wing populist ex-president had paved the way for the ban and that even worse would come to the USA if he were to become president again.

“This is what a second Trump term looks like: more bans, more suffering and less freedom,” Harris told supporters of her Democratic Party in Tucson, Arizona. “Just like in Arizona, he basically wants to take America back to the 19th century,” she warned. “But we won’t let that happen.”

No exceptions for rape or incest

Harris’ visit to the southwestern US state came just days after the Arizona Supreme Court rolled back abortion rights there and ruled that an 1864 ban was legal. This means that practically all abortions are banned there – even in the case of rape or incest there are no exceptions.

Democrats have made abortion rights a central issue in their presidential campaign, accusing Trump of being responsible for bans in several states. In Arizona, a hotly contested election, Democrats are spending heavily on a campaign aimed at young people and women as a result of the court ruling. The Democratic attorney general, like the Democratic governor of Arizona, opposes the far-reaching abortion ban.

Trump: Ban goes too far

Abortion rights are a difficult issue for Trump because it could potentially cost him important votes from women voters. The right-wing populist enjoys strong support in conservative evangelical circles that vehemently reject abortion. President Joe Biden and his Democrats are hoping to score points with many voters in the presidential election in November with their support for liberal abortion rights.

Trump had already admitted that the complete abortion ban in Arizona went too far. On his website on Friday, he called on the state government to change the 160-year-old law. There must be exceptions after rape, incest and when the mother’s life is in danger. At the same time, Trump repeated untrue claims that Democrats supported the killing of newborns.
