“A manhunt” and “the largest electoral interference in the history” of the United States.
This is how Donald Trump described his indictment this Thursday, making him the first former US president to face criminal charges.
“What the Democrats have done is unthinkable: impeach a completely innocent person in an act of blatant election interference. Never before in the history of our country had something similar happened,” reads the statement released by the former president.
A New York grand jury indicted him after investigating payment of $130,000 to actress Stormy Daniels in an attempt to silence her about an alleged relationship in the past, something he has always denied.
Daniels claims that she had a relationship with Trump when he was married and that they paid her not to tell anything. The payment itself would not be illegal, but Trump appears to have recorded it as a business expense. In New York, falsifying business information is illegal.
The details of the charges have not yet been publishedbut Trump was not slow to react to the news.
And he has also attacked Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, in charge of his accusation.
Has said that is “doing Joe Biden’s dirty work”in reference to the current president, who beat Trump in the 2020 elections and could be his rival again in 2024.
“They are trying to influence the election. It is an attack on our country,” he told ABC News by phone.
