Trump’s Support in Norway Plummets, But a Dedicated Base Remains

Support for former US President Donald Trump among Norwegians has significantly declined, falling from 20% to just 9% since November 2024, according to a recent poll conducted by Ipsos. While overall enthusiasm has waned, a committed segment of the population continues to view Trump as a symbol of broader political and cultural shifts.

Dramatic Decline in Norwegian Approval

The Ipsos poll, first reported by Aftenposten, reveals a substantial decrease in positive sentiment towards Trump within Norway. This shift is particularly pronounced among young men, a demographic that initially showed considerable support following the 2024 presidential election. In November 2024, 53% of young Norwegian men expressed satisfaction with Trump’s election victory. However, a year later, that figure dropped to 29%.

“If you look at Norwegians as a whole, there are few who are particularly satisfied with Trump,” stated a senior consultant at Ipsos. “But we see that there is a hard core that supports him.” This suggests a polarization of opinion, with a shrinking but resolute group maintaining their allegiance.

A Symbol of Cultural Shift

Despite the overall decline, some Norwegians continue to see value in Trump’s political ideology. Herman Winther, 25, leader of the Association for all Conservative Students (FAKS), articulated this perspective, describing Trump as a symbolic figurehead for “a rational cultural shift in the West.”

Winther elaborated that this shift encompasses a desire for stricter immigration policies and a greater emphasis on national identity. “I think Trump makes it easier for Europeans to adopt similar policies, which I think Europe also needs,” he said. This viewpoint highlights a perceived connection between Trump’s policies and a growing sentiment within Europe for more conservative approaches to governance.

Implications for Transatlantic Politics

The decline in support for Trump in Norway reflects a broader trend of diminishing international enthusiasm following his time in office. While a dedicated base remains, the overall decrease suggests a recalibration of perceptions and a potential shift in transatlantic political dynamics. The continued support, however, underscores the enduring appeal of Trump’s message to those who believe in a more nationally focused and culturally conservative agenda.
