The lawyers of Republican Donald Trump requested the termination of the case against him for illegal handling of confidential documents, reported France Presse, quoted by BTA.
Trump, who is running for a second term in the White House, has been accused of leaking classified documents after he left the presidency. He is accused of compromising national security by storing the documents at his private residence in Mar a Lago, Florida. Among these documents were military plans or information about nuclear weapons. Trump should have turned them over to the National Archives, as required by law.
Trump’s lawyers yesterday asked the judge in the case, Eileen Cannon, to delay the proceedings to allow them to study how the recent Supreme Court decision would affect the case.
In an unprecedented ruling, the Supreme Court on Monday ruled that a US president is at least entitled to a presumption of immunity for his official actions.
Trump continues to say he has presidential immunity in the four cases against him. In May, he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying accounting records to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels at the end of his 2016 presidential campaign. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump’s lawyers wrote to the judge in the case to ask for the sentence to be overturned. It was due to be delivered on July 11, but has now been postponed to mid-September
The trial over the mishandling of classified documents was also delayed by Judge Eileen Cannon, who was appointed by Trump himself and has therefore drawn criticism for favoring him.
There are two other lawsuits against Trump, one federal and one in Georgia, for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Those cases are complicated by the Supreme Court’s decision.
