Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on August 15 to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine. The U.S. president warned he “won’t be happy” if an agreement isn’t reached.

Despite Trump’s strong stance on securing a Ukraine ceasefire, the meeting on the tarmac in Alaska saw the two leaders engage in a surprisingly relaxed exchange. As Putin approached, Trump offered applause and a handshake, then they briefly posed for photos, appearing to bypass journalists’ questions.

This cordial reception for Putin, who faces accusations of war crimes, has drawn criticism. Some observers expressed dismay, viewing Trump’s actions as pandering on U.S. soil during discussions of critical international issues.

Social media commentary reflected this sentiment. One user posted a vomiting emoji, stating, “Trump just clapped as Putin was coming towards him, and then they did a lovey dovey smiley handshake.” Another critic remarked, “Trump applauded like an excited school boy… This is the sickest s*** ever.” A third observer questioned, “He has zero social etiquette. WTF is he clapping for?”

However, the warm greeting was defended by some who saw it as a diplomatic necessity. A Trump supporter commented, “Because he is in a diplomatic mission, welcoming a head of state, because he hopes to accomplish something good and wants Putin to feel welcome. That is what real leaders and real heads of states do.”

The meeting, scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. local time, was expected to continue into the evening. While Trump has stated his focus on a Ukraine ceasefire, official details from the White House regarding specific proposals or outcomes of the closed-door discussions have not yet been released.
