Trunk Bay on the north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been crowned the world’s best beach for 2026 by Beach.com, leading a dominant territorial showing that placed three U.S. Virgin Islands locations in the global top 25.
Trunk Bay Takes the Global Crown
Surpassing hundreds of global submissions evaluated through satellite analysis, travel expert recommendations, and nearly 100,000 traveler reviews, Trunk Bay captured the top spot in the newly released Global Beach Index. The supreme crescent of clear water and white sand on St. John bested international competitors to secure the world’s premier beach designation.
Behind the ranking is a methodical scoring system. According to published methodology from Beach.com, 58 travel experts, content creators, and local authorities nominated 322 beaches. The final index combined expert input, which accounted for 30 percent of the overall score, with popularity at 27 percent and water quality at 26 percent. Additional data streams included five years of NASA MODIS-Aqua satellite observations and a decade of global climate information.

Natural Protection and Underwater Trails
Part of what preserves Trunk Bay’s appeal is its protected geography. The beach lies entirely within the Virgin Islands National Park, an expanse covering nearly 60 percent of St. John, including almost the entirety of the north shore. This federal protection shields the landscape from overdevelopment.
Beyond its shores, the location features a 225-yard underwater snorkeling trail.

Trunk Bay’s victory anchored a historic showing for the U.S. Virgin Islands, which claimed more than 10 percent of the worldwide top 25 across 14 countries and four continents. On St. Croix, the Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge captured the No. 7 spot globally. Celebrated for its two-mile stretch of pristine shoreline, Sandy Point serves as a critical nesting habitat for endangered leatherback sea turtles and stands out for its lack of commercial development.
Rounding out the territory’s representation, Magens Bay Beach on St. Thomas landed at No. 17, praised for its heart-shaped bay, high water-quality ratings, and reliable amenities.
Navigating Crowds and Peak Travel Seasons
With global recognition comes heavy tourism traffic. Peak season at Trunk Bay runs from mid-December through April, bringing optimal weather alongside large crowds. Travel experts recommend visiting the destination between April and June, when tourist density drops significantly.
For visitors arriving during busier months, experts advise arriving before 8 AM or after 3 PM to avoid cruise ship traffic.
