230,000 people in eight prefectures in Japan were evacuated on Sunday as tsunami waves more than a meter high hit coastal areas. This was reported by the Japanese public broadcaster NHK. The tsunami was triggered by the eruption of an underwater volcano off Tonga. The tsunami warning was also issued for areas affected by the deadly 2011 tsunami.
Ten boats capsized in Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island in the south. Japan Airlines canceled 27 flights at airports across the country.
Communication lines with Tonga remain broken. Injuries among the 105,000 residents or damage have not yet been reported. Several South Pacific island nations, including Fiji, issued tsunami warnings.
Australia issued tsunami warnings for its Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. Many beaches on the country’s east coast have been closed.
