The DRA underlined, in a press release, that market gardening occupies an important place in the crop rotation practiced in the Tangier-Tétouan Al Hoceima region, with an area of 58,880 ha, including 14,200 ha dedicated to apple cultivation. of land, or 24% of the overall area cultivated in market gardening, noting that 60% of the area is carried out at the Loukkos perimeter.
In this context, the regional management indicated that the annual areas dedicated to potatoes are around 9,000 ha, divided into two seasons, the autumn season which extends from September to February and the winter season (from December to May).
“For the current campaign, we noted an increase in area sown with late-season potatoes of +12% compared to the previous campaign and an increase in average yield of more than 25% (30 tonnes/ha) “, specified the same source, noting that the forecast seasonal potato program is 6,500 ha, with a corresponding production of more than 300,000 tonnes.
In terms of production factors, the DRA noted the availability of local and imported potato seeds in sufficient quantities, as well as the fertilizers necessary for the success of the sowing programs.
The same source recalled that the Loukkos perimeter is characterized by the diversity of market gardening crops, in this case the cultivation of potatoes which occupies a significant part in the annual crop program, noting that this perimeter is distinguished by a significant potential in terms of irrigated agricultural land with an area exceeding 45,000 ha, combined with significant water resources, modernized hydro-agricultural equipment, and climatic conditions favorable to the development of different crops, in particular market gardening, red fruits, fodder crops and fruit trees.
The management, in this regard, affirmed that the Regional Agricultural Development Office (ORMVA) of Loukkos plays an important role in the implementation of the programs of the Ministry of Agriculture aimed at increasing agricultural production and crop productivity, the modernization of irrigation networks, and consequently the improvement of farmers’ income, through the encouragement of investments and the contribution to the supply of the local market with agricultural products, and this to ensure the food security of our country.
The ORMVA of Loukkos also works for the implementation of programs of the Ministry of Agriculture aimed at improving production, productivity and support for farmers, in this case the program to reduce the impact of the deficit rainfall and the economic situation on the agricultural sector in its aspect of supporting the sectors and reducing the cost of production of vegetables and fruits, noted the same source, stressing that this program was marked by great interest on the part of the farmers.
To support producers, the Loukkos ORMVA has put in place support measures, namely awareness campaigns with all professional organizations and members of the Chamber of Agriculture, and the strengthening of resource teams. human and logistical, by providing farmers with reception centers at the level of each field entity.
