The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology will not replace jobs, the head of Tui Group has pledged.

The executive board of Europe’s largest travel group has approved a joint policy document on the use of artificial intelligence with its works council.

The policy document sets out “guardrails” for the introduction and use of AI at Tui with a focus on its capabilities and impact on staff.

This includes training to make staff fit for an AI-driven world of work.

“In particular, applications based on genetic artificial intelligence will lead to increased productivity and efficiency,” Tui said.

The company added that it will offer training programs that will allow employees to understand the potential of genetic artificial intelligence at an early stage and to test and introduce these technologies in their own field of work.

Group chief Sybille Reiss said: “Tui will make extensive use of artificial intelligence in its own systems and day-to-day work processes.

“It is important to us that employees can keep up with these technological innovations.

“At Tui, we are convinced that artificial intelligence does not replace jobs, but certain tasks. That’s why we focus on training our employees for higher-value jobs.

“We are embracing an important issue for the future and shaping it – openly and without fear.”

An artificial intelligence advisory group with equal representation from the company and employees will monitor technical progress as well as “relevant ethical issues.”

The commission is also tasked with ensuring health protection, particularly with regard to potential psychological stress, according to Tui.

Group works council chairman Frank Jakobi said: “We are harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence for Tui – responsibly and with a focus on opportunity.

“This is why workers are at the heart of the policy document – employment and working conditions at Tui will not deteriorate as a result of the introduction and use of artificial intelligence.

“Artificial intelligence should contribute to a diverse, fair and non-discriminatory work environment. In terms of applicants and employees, the following applies at Tui – the final decision is made by a human.”
