The Foundation for Tulsa Schools distributed copies of the children’s book "The Kitty Cat Alphabet", written and donated by Tulsa sisters Andrea Burris and Anna Schad, to all Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) elementary libraries.
“It’s just a privilege to be able to donate the books to the kids and know that they’re going to be appreciated by the kids and the families," said Burris.
The book distribution kicked off on Tuesday, October 24th, to coincide with National Cat Day, at Key Elementary School.
Key Elementary even has their own classroom cat, named Finnegan, who was able to attend the kickoff and celebrate National Cat Day and his birthday.
"Anyone who’s had cats can relate to this book. Everything that the cats do in the book, your cats do in real life," said Burris.
Burris and Schad donated 1,600 copies of their book to the Foundation for Tulsa Schools.
"The Kitty Cat Alphabet" is geared towards kindergarten through 2nd-grade students.
"One of the things we did when we were writing the books, we didn’t want to dumb them down,” said Burris.
“So, you’ll notice there’s vocabulary, there’s alliteration, there’s a lot of things that teachers really like in terms of how they’re teaching the kids."
The books were given to TPS elementary schools to enrich classrooms and to give students a love for reading.
"I think if you raise the bar, then the kids come up to that bar, and I think they enjoy it and they learn more," said Burris.
