Tunisia documents the killing of hundreds of migrants since the beginning of the year

The Tunisian Coast Guard announced, “13 migrants were killed off the coast of the states of Monastir and Mahdia in the east of the country.”

According to Agence France-Presse, the official spokesman for the courts of the two states, Farid Bin Jaha, said, “The Coast Guard recovered 13 bodies off the coast of the Shaba and Salqata regions,” noting that “the victims are most likely from African countries.”

It is noteworthy that, according to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, “In the year 2023, more than 1,300 migrants were lost due to the sinking of boats off the Tunisian coast, and during the beginning of this year until the middle of last May, 103 migrant boats sank.”

According to the International Organization for Migration, “more than thirty thousand migrants have died in the Mediterranean during the last ten years, including three thousand people in 2023.”

On September 12, the General Administration of the Tunisian National Guard announced that “the bodies of 6 irregular African migrants, including a baby, had been recovered off the coast of the city of Monastir, eastern Tunisia.”

According to a tally published by the Tunisian National Guard last June, “the authorities in the country recovered 462 bodies of irregular migrants from the beginning of 2024 until last May, compared to 714 during the same period in 2023.” The statement also reported, “30,281 irregular migrants were rescued, compared to 21.” One thousand and 652 irregular immigrants during the same period last year.”

Tunisia, along with Libya, is the main departure point in North Africa for migrants seeking to cross the Mediterranean to Italy.
