The country has been going through an exacerbated bread crisis since the President of the Republic declared on July 27 that he wanted subsidized bread accessible to all Tunisians. Since this declaration, it is the commotion at certain so-called “modern” or “unclassified” bakeries which have announced the suspension of their production. They are in the sights of the government, because they produce different special breads, in addition to the subsidized baguette, and are accused of inflating prices or mixing flour with certain breads so as not to sell the subsidized baguette at the symbolic price of 190 millimes , or 0.13 euro cents. A very sensitive subject in a country where nearly 3.5 million baguettes are consumed daily.
