Abdel Sattar Al-Masoudi, the lawyer of the candidate for the Tunisian presidential elections, Al-Ayachi Zemal, said, “The Jendouba court ruled to imprison him for one year and eight months, after he was convicted of forging popular endorsements for the presidential elections.”

“The ruling is politically motivated, unfair and aims to undermine his chances in the presidential race and show him to Tunisians as a dishonest person,” Massoudi said.

Al-Masoudi added: “Ayachi Zamal is facing more than 30 lawsuits filed by citizens who accuse the presidential candidate of falsifying their endorsements and attributing them to himself,” stressing that “Zamal” will boycott his trial session at the Jendouba Court of First Instance in protest against the conditions of his trial.”

“Zamal” was arrested two weeks ago on charges of forging documents and falsifying popular endorsements.

On September 11, lawyer Abdel Sattar Al-Masoudi announced that “the Public Prosecution Office at the Siliana Court of First Instance issued five warrants for his client’s imprisonment, who is running for the presidential elections, on charges of ‘forging endorsements.’”

Prior to that, Zamal’s election campaign announced that the prosecution had ordered his imprisonment on September 6, pending trial on the aforementioned charge.

Tunisian laws require presidential candidates to collect 10 endorsements from members of parliament, 40 endorsements from heads of local, regional or municipal councils, or 10,000 endorsements from citizens distributed across 10 electoral districts.

On September 2, the Independent High Authority for Elections announced that the final list of candidates for the presidential elections was limited to 3, out of 17 candidacy files, excluding 3 others despite the Administrative Court accepting their appeals.
