The opposition National Salvation Front in Tunisia announced that it will not participate in the presidential elections next October.

The head of the National Salvation Front, Ahmed Najib Chebbi, said during a press conference in the capital, Tunis: “The position of the National Salvation Front, which represents a coalition of 6 parties, including the Ennahdha Movement, is not to present a candidate for the presidential elections.”

He added: “The reason this decision was taken is that the conditions for competition do not exist,” adding: “If the conditions change, every accident will have a new effect.”

Al-Shabi added: “The elections are a right that we adhere to, but the conditions for competition are non-existent, but we will work to change them, and if things do not develop, we will not be part of the electoral theatrics.”

He wondered: “The headquarters of the National Salvation Front has been confiscated, and entry is not allowed. So what elections are we talking about if the freedom of assembly and expression is confiscated,” adding: “We will fight for free elections.”

Last February, President Kais Saied confirmed that the presidential elections would take place on time, and on October 13, 2019, Saied was elected President of the Republic for a period of 5 years, and since July 25, 2021, Tunisia has been witnessing a political crisis, when Saied began imposing exceptional measures, including dissolving the Judicial Council and Parliament, and issuing… Legislation by presidential orders, and approval of a new constitution via referendum in July 2022.
