Istanbul: The death toll from the massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has crossed 5100. Rescue operations are ongoing in both countries. A fifth major earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 hit eastern Turkey on Tuesday. Rescue workers are continuing their mission to dig through the debris and bring out the trapped people.
Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 southeastern provinces following the earthquake. “A state of emergency is being declared in order to quickly carry out rescue operations,” Erdogan said on official TV channels.
At the same time, the World Health Organization said that the number of deaths in Turkey and Syria will rise to eight times. It is reported that around 18,000 people have been injured in the earthquake. Around 6000 buildings were destroyed in the earthquake. Many countries have offered aid to the disaster area. Disaster relief teams have reached Syria from countries including India.
More than 3,600 people died and 14,483 were injured in Turkey. Officials say 1,500 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured in Syria.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks in Turkey. An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale was felt in southeastern Turkey. An aftershock of 6.7 on the Richter scale was also felt 15 minutes later. There were at least 50 aftershocks.
