Turkey’s presidency on Wednesday denied rumors that the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has suffered a heart attack, spread on social media after the president canceled his electoral program today for health reasons.

“We categorically reject the unsubstantiated rumors regarding the health of President Erdogan”the head of the presidential communication office, Fahrettin Altun, wrote on Twitter, along with some screenshots of messages that spoke of an alleged myocardial infarction.

“The president will participate tomorrow (Thursday) in the opening ceremony of the nuclear power plant via videoconference,” added Altun, referring to the Akkuyu atomic plant in the southeast of the country.

Erdogan had to briefly interrupt a live television interview on Tuesday night and this Wednesday morning he canceled his scheduled work schedulewhich included rallies in three central Anatolian provinces ahead of the May 14 presidential election.

“Today I will rest at home in accordance with the advice of our doctors,” Erdogan, 69, announced on his Twitter account.

Of course, an interview with the president this Thursday night jointly with several large Turkish broadcasters has been cancelled, reports the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet.

Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey since 2002, is currently facing his toughest electoral race in the last two decades.

Most polls predict a loss to his rival, Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, a joint candidate for an opposition alliance.
