Representatives of the Turkish and Syrian intelligence services have held three rounds of talks over the past month on issues of normalizing bilateral relations and organizing the first meeting since 2011 between the presidents of the two countries, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, the newspaper Turkiye reported this with reference to a source.

Initially, Iraq was discussed as a venue for the meeting between Erdogan and Assad, now Ankara is also considering the option of holding the summit at the Kessab checkpoint in Syria on the border with Turkey. “The process is developing rapidly, both leaders (Erdogan and Assad – editor’s note) will take a joint photo in August at the latest,” writes Turkiye.

Turkish media have repeatedly reported on a possible meeting between Erdogan and Assad in the near future, including in Moscow. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the corresponding publication in the Daily Sabah newspaper on July 22, said that the issue of organizing contacts between representatives of Turkey and Syria is on the agenda in Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in the Kremlin on July 23, but it is unknown whether the issue of a meeting between Erdogan and Assad was discussed during the talks.
