On July 21, Turkish media quoted President Recep Tayyip Erdogan state the planned discussions between you and your Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will pave the way for recovery Black Sea Grains Initiative.

Erdogan also called on Western countries to consider Russia’s demands.

Speaking to staff on a return flight from visiting Gulf countries and northern Cyprus, Erdogan said the termination of the Black Sea Grain Agreement would have many consequences, from rising global food prices to food shortages in some regions and possibly new waves of migration.

He expressed confidence that through thorough discussions on this issue with President Putin, the parties can ensure the maintenance of the Grain Initiative.

The Black Sea Grains Initiative expired on July 17, but the parties could not reach an agreement to renew it.

The agreement to maintain Ukrainian grain exports through ports in the Black Sea during the conflict, was signed by Russia and Ukraine with the mediation of the United Nations and Turkey in July 2022 and has been renewed several times.

On July 17, Russia did not agree to extend the agreement on the grounds that Moscow’s requirements related to its fertilizer and food exports within the framework of the agreement were not complied with.

Russia insists that it will only return to the agreement when its requirements for easier access to the global market for its foods and fertilizers are met.

According to President Erdogan, both sides know that the Russian leader has specific wishes about the actions of Western countries.

Therefore, the West’s response plays a key role in helping to break the deadlock. The Turkish leader also reiterated earlier statements that he hopes President Putin will visit Türkiye next August.

He is confident that the parties will be able to ensure the restoration of the grain agreement without having to prolong the process.
