More than 60 people, mostly police officers, were injured Tuesday in Istanbul during an anti-Israel demonstration during which demonstrators tried to force entry to the building housing the Israeli consulate, authorities announced.

“A total of 63 citizens, including 43 police officers, were injured during these incidents,” the Istanbul governorate said in a statement on Wednesday.

A 65-year-old man at the scene died following a heart attack, authorities reported.

According to the governorate, some 80,000 people flocked to the Israeli consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday evening, after the rocket attack on a hospital in the Gaza Strip which left several hundred civilian deaths among patients and displaced Palestinians.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attributed the strike to the Jewish state on Tuesday evening, denouncing “the latest example of Israeli attacks devoid of all humanity”, while Israel and the Palestinians blame each other for the shooting.

Five individuals who forced the police cordon deployed in front of the Israeli consulate were arrested, the governorate said.

Citing growing “terrorist threats” to its fellow citizens, Israel asked its nationals to leave Turkey “as soon as possible”.
