Türkiye will send a drilling ship to the coast of Somalia to explore promising oil and gas fields.
As reported by Day.Az, the agreement between Ankara and Mogadishu was announced on July 18 by Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar.
According to the Turkish minister, seismic exploration of promising offshore fields in the African country will be carried out by the Oruç Reis vessel, after which drilling operations will begin.
“The sea depth in the work area varies between 2-3 km, but overall drilling will be carried out to a depth of up to 7 km,” said the head of the Ministry of Energy.
Bayraktar noted that thanks to the National Energy Strategy implemented by Ankara in the period after 2016, Turkey today has all the opportunities to independently conduct drilling and exploration work in the offshore zone.
“The Oruç Reis has a crew of 50 people. This ship will be accompanied by five auxiliary ships and Turkish Navy vessels on its way to Somalia,” the Turkish minister added.
