Turmoil in SYRIZA: Kasealaki’s Presidency Challenged Amid Party Infighting

After the extraordinary meeting of the Political Secretariat, he referred to a deviation following the decision of the Central Committee to declare him dismissed.

“In the face of deviation, calmness, patience, and self-restraint are our strengths. Turn your anger into creation. I am here,” stated Stefanos Kasselakis.

“I made a mistake in supporting Mr. Kasselakis,” said Pavlos Polakis.

The secretary of SYRIZA, Rania Svigkou, convened an extraordinary meeting of the Political Secretariat to clarify whether Mr. Kasselakis is dismissed or not. Outside the offices, supporters of the former president have gathered, denouncing Olga Gerovasili, Kostas Zachariadis, Thanasis Theoharopoulos, and Alekos Flambouraris.

Prior to this, Mr. Kasselakis had called the party’s secretary, during which, according to party sources, he allegedly requested the party’s financial director to take back his office at Koumoundourou.

With a vote of 17-1, the Political Secretariat closed the matter, reaffirming the Central Committee’s decision that dismissed Mr. Kasselakis. Theodora Tsakri remained alone in defending Mr. Kasselakis in the Political Secretariat and, according to reports, hinted that the matter could also be resolved in court.

“There is only one solution: the unanimous and collective recognition of the legal principle that the president remains in office legally, politically, and institutionally until his replacement or re-election. The prolongation of the management vacuum entails political collapse and economic bankruptcy,” stated Ms. Tsakri.

Olga Gerovasili escalated the situation by calling for the highest body to explicitly condemn Kasselakis’s behavior.

“Respecting the decisions of the Party’s collective bodies and adhering to the statutes and party procedures is an obligation for every member, especially for those who wish to lead the space,” commented Ms. Gerovasili.

In anticipation of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the president of the Parliamentary Group, Nikos Pappas, having Socratis Famellos by his side, did not wish to escalate the tension.

Alexis Charitsis spoke of degeneracy and tragicomedy during the TIF press conference, commenting on the events occurring in SYRIZA and placing part of the blame on Alexis Tsipras.

Alexis Charitsis left open the possibility of collaboration with progressive forces on a programmatic level.
