The pro-European government of new Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk won the confidence of Parliament on Tuesday, ending the eight years in power of the populist nationalists PiS. By 248 votes to 201, the deputies of the lower house of Parliament gave their support to the government of Donald Tusk, 66, who must now be inaugurated on Wednesday by Polish President Andrzej Duda.

In his speech to deputies, the 66-year-old leader called on the world for “total mobilization” in favor of Ukraine in the face of the Russian offensive and assured to work “effectively in favor of kyiv”. “In a few dozen hours, I will go to Brussels (to the European summit, editor’s note), with the hope (…) of persuading our traditional allies to be unequivocally in favor of freedom, republican values and of the defense of Ukraine against Russian aggression,” said Donald Tusk.

First intervention

The former head of the European Council (2014-2019) also expressed his hope of meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during this summit. He also promised to resolve the conflict at the border with Ukraine, blocked for a month by Polish truck drivers who denounce “unfair competition” from their Ukrainian colleagues. The blockage caused a serious crisis in relations between the two countries. “We have already found the solutions to respond as quickly as possible to the needs of Polish carriers and unblock the border,” he said.
