An elimination and infinite regrets on the TF1 side. On Sunday, the front page broadcast live the shock quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup between the French team and South Africa, the outgoing world champion. The narrow defeat of the Blues (28-29) ignited Médiamétrie, since the match recorded the best audience of the year 2023 with 16.5 million viewers on average, or 62.1% audience share overall audiences aged four and over. The market share increases to 70.7% on the strategic target of women responsible for purchases under 50 years old (FRDA-50). Proof that rugby is far from only appealing to men.

A peak of 18.39 million was recorded at the end of the game, at 10:51 p.m. For TF1, which will broadcast the last four matches of the competition, the shortfall is significant. In terms of audience and advertising, rugby matches without the Blues are a completely different matter. On Saturday evening, 9.27 million viewers followed Ireland’s defeat against New Zealand. A very important figure, of course, but not comparable to the matches of the French team, the goose that lays the golden eggs for the television channels. Note that 2.89 million sports fans stayed after the match and until midnight for the “World Cup Mag”, presented by Isabelle Ithurburu (24.4% of the public).

Very good score also for England-Fiji

The other good audience of the day is also due to the Rugby World Cup. Broadcast on M 6, between 5 p.m. and 6:50 p.m., the second quarter-final on Sunday between England and Fiji attracted 5.84 million people. The market share amounts to 41.1% (and 36.7% on the FRDA-50).

Faced with the oval ball, the competition collapsed like a scrum that wasn’t strong enough. Only two channels exceeded the million viewers mark in the first part of the evening. France 3 with the New Zealand series “Brokenwood”. The evening episode brought together 1.79 million people until 10:40 p.m., or 6.7% of the public (and only 0.4% FRDA-50)! France 2 is just behind with its cinema evening. “The Little Tenant” by Nadège Loiseau with Karin Viard, Philippe Rebbot and Hélène Vincent attracted 1.63 million moviegoers, or 6.2% of the public (and 3.8% of the FRDA-50).

Arte is doing well, M 6 is struggling to attract women

The evenings are very difficult on the FRDA-50 side for all the channels which struggle to exceed 1%. Only M 6 and W9 limit the damage, at very low levels: 5.2% on this target for the first with the magazine “Zone Interdicted” by Ophélie Meunier on the secrets of the biggest fairs in France (925,000 viewers at total) and 2.2% on the target for “Tamara” by Alexandre Castagnetti with Héloïse Martin, Rayane Bensetti and Sylvie Testud (250,000 people in attendance). Arte exceeds 900,000 viewers with “Black Book”, a Dutch historical film by Paul Verhoeven (3.7% of the public).
