Unscrupulous investment banker Jordan Belfort lives a life of ecstasy and excess. But the FBI isn’t far…

Martin Scorsese’s “Killer of the Flower Moon” is currently in the running for the Oscar, again starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Reason enough to watch “The Wolf of Wall Street” again, which was first released in cinemas in 2012. In many ways, it’s a classic Scorsese film, following the patterns he set in particular in the 90s: epic length, organized crime, a true biography as a template. And yet the film differs from gangster films like “GoodFellas” or “Casino” because it is not about the mafia, but rather about the actually respected world of high finance in the USA. In this way, the film also anticipates “Flower Moon” to a certain extent in that it does not show the underground, but instead accuses how greed and violence reign even in apparently respected milieus. However, the film serves up criticism as an absurd comedy that ridicules the excesses of the main characters.

“The Wolf of Wall Street” airs at 9:55 p.m. on Arte.

The film shows the story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), who wants to make a career as a broker in the 80s. After the stock market crash in 1987, he had to change his plans and founded his own company. With the help of his loyal employees, including Donnie Azoff (Jonah Hill), he sells hopelessly overpriced stocks to investors. Soon the company is raking in millions and Belfort gets used to a hedonistic lifestyle full of drugs, excessive parties and paid sex. He marries the glamorous Naomi (Margot Robbie) and feels like king of the world. But the bankers’ illegal activities do not go unnoticed, and at some point the FBI is on their trail…
