The trade deadline has come and gone without a deal for position-player help, but the Minnesota front office is turning to internal talent to jolt a sputtering lineup. Shortstop Kaelen Culpepper, considered one of the top 50 prospects in Major League Baseball, is set to join the big league club for the weekend series in Milwaukee, according to a team source.
The promotion comes at a critical juncture. Minnesota’s offense has struggled to generate runs since the All-Star break, scoring three or fewer tallies in 11 of their last 19 contests. Shortstop, meanwhile, has been a revolving door, with multiple players rotating through the position before Ryan Kreidler stabilized the defensive side of the ball. While Kreidler brought defensive stability, his bat has slipped, leaving an opening for a spark.
Minor League Production and Injury Hurdles
Culpepper’s ascent to the majors follows a rapid and productive rise through the organization’s minor league ranks. Selected 21st overall out of Kansas State University in the 2024 MLB Draft, the righty-swinging infielder quickly established himself as a cornerstone talent. In 2025, playing across High-A Cedar Rapids and Double-A Wichita, he batted .289 with 20 home runs, 64 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases over 113 games, earning the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year honors.
That momentum carried into 2026 at Triple-A St. Paul, though injuries tested his durability. Culpepper missed significant time due to a glute strain that landed him on the injured list for nearly two months earlier in the summer. Despite being limited to 74 games this season, he has slashed .271/.367/.478 with 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. The Twins’ top prospect pack notes that he also accumulated 31 extra-base hits and a 116 wRC+ at Triple-A.
Since returning from his latest stint on the injured list on July 24, Culpepper has found a rhythm at the plate, going 12-for-45 overall. That hot streak includes going 7-for-17 with three doubles and a triple across his past four games, convincing the front office that the bat is ready for the ultimate test.
Defensive Growth and Front Office Expectations
Beyond his offensive capabilities, Culpepper has logged extensive work refining his play at shortstop. After struggling with routine plays during his initial professional exposure, the infielder committed heavily to defensive improvements requested by the coaching staff.

To clear a spot on the 26-man active roster for Culpepper, the Twins placed starting pitcher Joe Ryan on the 15-day injured list with a glute strain.

Minnesota manager Derek Shelton addressed the philosophy behind promoting young talent when speaking to reporters after the team’s 4-3 victory over Kansas City. Shelton made it clear that players brought up from the minors are not coming to sit on the bench.
