Twitter and the blue tick confusion

Lit was announced long ago, and that’s why at some point nobody believed in it anymore. But Elon Musk got serious and put his last threat into action: Oh dear, he’s gone! So the blue tick, not Musk.

In the future, only those who are willing to pay eight dollars a month for it can carry the hook. Because that, in turn, can lead to people renaming themselves, say, Rihanna or Sido and signing up for “Twitter Blue” (that’s the $8 hook service), the confusion is huge. Who is the real Rihanna? The one with the hook? Or the other, with 108 million followers? If you can buy the status, there can no longer be any talk of verification. Except, verification means nothing more than: has eight bucks left a month. So there’s a catch.

Elon Musk had previously announced that some celebrities who were unwilling to pay would personally pay for the blue tick. A well-intentioned gesture. On the one hand, it is completely non-transparent as to who this applies to and for what reasons. If you click on a blue tick, no matter which one, it just says: “This account is verified because they subscribed to Twitter Blue and confirmed a phone number.” So it can actually be the case with any account that it is a “real” celebrity is that Elon Musk made an exception for – or that someone is actually paying money.

Also Germans among the victims

Second, many celebrities (or those who have at least a certain number of followers) seem extremely embarrassed to even be associated with Twitter Blue, God forbid, with the idea that they’d even make 80 cents in the Pay a month for a ridiculous hook.

So you can now read the following sentence from big Twitter accounts everywhere: It wasn’t me! And I never will have been! There are also Germans among the victims: in the meantime, the accounts of Jan Böhmermann, the Tagesschau and Karl Lauterbach were affected by Musk’s donation hook.

A particularly famous example is the author Stephen King. Seldom at a loss to engage in a political debate (he recently tweeted, “It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating: if men could get pregnant, abortion would be sacramental”), King has also gotten himself into the Twitter hook thing never held back and announced from the start that he didn’t want to pay.

He then tweeted a few days ago: “My twitter account says I’m subscribed to twitter blue. I haven’t. My twitter account said I gave my phone number. I haven’t.” Special cringe moment: Elon Musk himself replied to King: “You’re welcome, namaste”. Stephen King then made a sensible suggestion: Wouldn’t Musk rather donate the eight dollars? To Ukraine? Musk replied, “I donated $100 million to Ukraine. How much did you donate?” However, King kept the blue tick.
