All about Twitter

Collecting lawsuits, Twitter received on Tuesday (18) its second lawsuit filed this month. The collective demand was filed by the company’s former senior engineer, Chris Woodfield, who claims that the company owes at least $500 million in compensation after the massive layoffs carried out with the arrival of Elon Musk.

The document also pointed out that the company was targeting older workers for layoffs, an allegation similar to two other class-action lawsuits: one that accused the company of firing more women than men and another of an individual worker who denounced the company for discriminating against workers with disabilities — at the time, Twitter won both lawsuits, there are no details on appeals (see here).

What do you need to know:

Twitter laid off more than half of its workforce as a cost-cutting measure after Musk acquired the company in October 2022; Woodfield, who worked for Twitter in Seattle, said the company had promised to pay two months’ salary, among other salaries, to laid-off employees; However, no one has yet received the money.

This is just another chapter in the wave of lawsuits that Twitter has been receiving since the mass layoffs. Another class action was filed last week with the same accusation: default on employees. Both documents allege that the company violated a federal law regulating employee benefit plans, established before Musk acquired the company.

The Woodfield lawsuit adds breach of contract and fraud.

In Ghana, in Africa, officials also accuse the company of not paying compensation for the dismissal of almost all employees of the social network’s only African office.

In response to other lawsuits, Twitter said the laid-off workers were paid in full. He also denies all accusations of bias and discrimination.
