Twitter officially started on Thursday (20) the removal of the blue seal from accounts that do not pay Twitter Blue, the new controversial social network subscription service that grants some benefits (including verification). However, as noted by Engadgetsome profiles of deceased celebrities that in theory would not be able to be verified, won the validation “stamp” last weekend.

  • Among the celebrities who have died, but who received the verification seal on their Twitter accounts, are: Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Kobe Bryant (Basketball player for the Lakers) and Anthony Bourdain (famous chef and presenter of gastronomy programs);
  • When clicking on the seal, the following message appears: “This account has been verified because they signed up for Twitter Blue and verified their phone number”;
  • It is worth noting that the celebrities died well before the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk, who implemented the new rule and service.

The mentioned celebrities, however, were not the only ones who received the benefit without having subscribed to the service. Musk reported that he is paying “some” signatures “in person” to grant validity to relevant accounts, as in the case of Lakers player LeBron James.

According to The Vergea Twitter employee emailed James (who had previously said he wouldn’t pay for verification) to “extend a free Twitter Blue membership to your account in the name of Elon Musk.”

Among other names graced by the ‘goodness’ of the new CEO of the social network, there is also that of the multi-award winning writer Stephen King, who explained in a tweet that “my account says that I subscribed to Twitter Blue. I didn’t sign. The bill says I gave a phone number. I didn’t give any.”

In the case of the accounts of deceased celebrities, it is not clear if they are “in the account” of Musk or if the businessman decided to grant verification for free.

It is worth remembering that the verification seal is important for security reasons, as it is a way of differentiating fake and official profiles. On Thursday, when the removal of badges from users who did not pay Twitter Blue began in fact (as promised by Musk), several celebrities lost their proof of authenticity, such as the accounts of the player Neymar and former president Jair Bolsonaro .

Among other big names, there are also Cristiano Ronaldo, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Learn more in this report from Digital Look.
