The US Seventh Fleet said in a statement that the guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Vancouver “conducted a routine transit of the Taiwan Strait on October 20.”
He added that this operation demonstrated “the commitment of the United States and Canada to the principle of freedom of navigation for all countries.”
This comes six days after China’s military maneuvers to encircle Taiwan.
During these transitions, China deployed its aircraft and warships, stressing that it would “never” give up the option of “using force” to invade Taiwan, which she considers to be one of her provinces that must be reunited with the rest of her territory.
Washington and its allies regularly cross this 180-kilometer-wide strait to assert its status as an international sea lane, a step that irritates Beijing.
China said on Monday that these moves are disturbing “peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
China’s military Eastern Command has deployed “naval and air forces to monitor and remain vigilant throughout the crossing, and manage the situation according to the laws,” its spokesman, Captain Li Shi, said in statement.
On its behalf, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense explained on Monday that American and Canadian ships had sailed “from the south of the strait to the north” and that the situation in the surrounding sea and airspace remained “normal”.
The ministry also announced that it had monitored 14 warplanes and 12 Chinese naval vessels over a 24-hour period until 06:00 (22:00 GMT Sunday).
