MADRID, 4 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least 24 people were killed in two attacks blamed on “bandit” groups in the northern Nigerian state of Zamfara on Saturday afternoon, most of the victims being members of local advocacy groups.

The attacks have taken place in the communities of Sikida and Janbako, especially in the latter, where 21 people died, most of them members of these “vigilante” groups that fight criminal gangs in the area.

These “bandits”, as the Nigerian government describes them, came from the vast forest linking the communities of Maradun, Bakura, Kaura Namoda and Shinkafi.

The Police have confirmed the attacks while the balance has been provided by civil society sources to the ‘Premium Times’, on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Self-defense groups have started an operation in the forest to neutralize the attackers, these sources add.
