At least two sailors were killed from Yemen’s Houthi rebels attack ship True Confidencein the Gulf of Aden, as reported by its crew and confirmed by a US official.

The two sailors are the first casualties since the Houthis launched attacks on ships in the area last November in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Six other sailors were injured. The crew abandoned the vessel, according to the US official. A total of 23 people were on board, 20 sailors and three armed guards. 15 of them were from the Philippines, four from Vietnam, two from Sri Lanka, one from India and one from Nepal.

Earlier the Houthis claimed responsibility, saying they hit the True Confidence with missiles, causing a fire. “The operation took place after the crew ignored warning messages from the Yemeni naval forces,” Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised address.
