Two ETA members acknowledge that the leadership of the terrorist group was able to prevent the murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco

In July 1997, the Ermua councilor for the PP, Miguel Angel Blanco Garrido, was kidnapped and assassinated by several members of ETA. The gang gave the Government a period of 48 hours to comply with their demands: to bring all the ETA prisoners closer to the Basque Country.

Spain was paralyzed for 3 days, but despite the forceful response of the population throughout the national territory, ETA ended the life of Blanco.

This event was a turning point to put an end to the terrorist organization. After 26 years of that tragedy, this Friday two ETA members who collaborate with Justice have confirmed that the dome was able to prevent the murder of the Ermua councilor.

How did ETA work?

As reported by ‘El Mundo’, the ETA members have detailed that ETA militants had a free hand to assassinate national police, military or civil guards, but in the case of attacking politicians or judges they first had to pass the filter of the Executive Committee .

That same Committee, they now acknowledge, “could have avoided the commission of assassination of Miguel Ángel Blanco“, quotes the newspaper.

Cause reopened

In March of last year, the judge of the National Court, Manuel Garcia-Castellonadmitted and beams the lawsuit filed by the Dignity and Justice Association against nine former leaders of the terrorist group ETA for the Blanco case.

In an order, the magistrate, who was precisely the investigator of the case more than 20 years ago, agreed to its reopening to clarify the role of the members that made up the Executive Committee of the organization (ZUBA) at the time of the events.

The objective of this investigation was to determine if the leadership gave the order to kill the councilor or if it was responsible for omission because he could have prevented his murder during the 48 hours that the councilor was kidnapped.
