Two Italian air force pilots were killed when the light aircraft they were flying crashed into the ground mid-air during a training exercise on Tuesday, Italy’s air force said in a statement.

Two U-208 aircraft crashed near a military airfield 25 kilometers (15 mi) northeast of Rome. Italian news agency ANSA reported that one of the planes landed in a field and the other crashed into a parked car.

The two pilots were aboard the U-208 training aircraft and were on a training mission, according to an Air Force press release. The cause of the collision was not immediately known.

The U-208 is a light, single-engine aircraft that can carry four passengers plus a pilot and has a cruising speed of 285 km/h.

Prime Minister Georgia Meloni offered her condolences to the families and colleagues of the pilots.
