An Iranian court has sentenced two journalists to three years in jail, with nearly a month in prison and the majority of their prison terms suspended, on charges of conspiracy and collusion, local media reported.

Elnaz Mohamadifrom the reformist daily Ham Mihan, and Negin Bagheriwho works for the Haft-e Sobh outlet, were sentenced to serve nearly a month in prison, their lawyer, Amir Raisian, told the newspaper of one of the defendants.

“The rest of the sentence will be suspended,” he added, according to the AFP news agency.

For a period of five years, the press workers must follow “professional ethics” courses and will be prohibited from leaving the country.

No details of the reasons that led to the accusations of conspiracy and collusion were known, the latter related to the intention of promoting an agreement through which it is intended to achieve a certain benefit at the expense of a third party, using fraudulent means.

Elnaz Mohamadi was detained for a week in February for an unknown reason. She is the sister of Elahe Mohamadi, who also works for Ham Mihan and who has been detained since September 2022 for reporting on Mahsa Amini’s funeral.

The death of Amini, a young Iranian Kurdish woman who died in detention after being arrested by police for allegedly breaking the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code, sparked a wave of protests in Iran.

Hundreds of people, including dozens of security agents, died during this mobilization.
