Faced with the risk of a landslide due to the rains, the authorities of the Municipality of Guatemala and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) decided to close two lanes of the boulevard Lourdes, in zone 5 of the capital, during this weekend.

In that place, for several days damage was reported to a metal vault that collapsed due to the currents of water from the Negro River, for which the capital’s commune had already reported on mitigation work in the area; however, Given the heavy rains this Saturday, September 2, they chose to restrict the passage as a prevention.

Amílcar Montejo, spokesperson for Emetra, confirmed that the road closures are due to preventive measures against the accumulation of water in the place.

“It rains in the department of Guatemala and that is why some measures are being taken in various jurisdictions. Consider, for example, that in the Villa Nueva area there is no crossing on the temporary bridge at kilometer 17.5 of the Pacific route, Likewise, sectors such as San Miguel Petapa and Santa Catarina Pinula are affected by this intense rain.

Montejo added that “Guatemala City is no exception and as a precaution and security measures during this first Saturday and Sunday of September 2023, the two lanes on Lourdes Boulevard are being closed, which go up from the Cuatro Caminos bridge to the covias neighborhood, in zone 5, this while the water level that accumulated in the area where erosion occurred a few days ago decreases.

He added that the lanes that go down from the Santa Ana neighborhood to the Jacarandas de Cayalá Ecological Park will continue to be active, but “A reversible lane will be being made.”

Montejo recommends following alternate routes. “If you come down from Sabana Arriba, from the Lourdes neighborhood and from the Santa Rosita neighborhood, you can use the sector of the La Paz road, go up through the San Antonio neighborhood towards Martí Street and you can also collaborate by going up on the Austrian boulevard towards the Rafael Landívar boulevard”.

He also said that for the “users of Acataán and Canajujú it is also appropriate that they use the Rafael Landívar boulevard to head towards Vista Hermosa Boulevard, this as security measures and as a precaution.”

Conred sources assure that the situation in zone 5 is high risk, so emergency meetings are planned for Sunday.
