Legia Warsaw players Radovan Pankov and Josué were arrested by Dutch police after the Europa Conference League match against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday evening.

According to information from the Polish press, Legia Warsaw’s departure from the AZ Alkmaar stadium did not go as planned on Thursday evening after the Dutch success (1-0) in the Europa Conference League. Riot police first stopped the team bus before arresting Legia players Radovan Pankov (28) and Josué (33). The reasons for this arrest are said to be linked to clashes between the Polish club and the police following the match.

Pankov and Joshua handcuffed and arrested

If we are to believe the information from TVP Sports, the Legia Warsaw players would have had a lot of difficulty getting back to their bus after the match. These difficulties in returning to the parking lot come from the decision of the authorities to close the stadium doors for ten minutes after the match. The lack of clear communication on the situation would have had the effect of very quickly straining the Polish side. These strong tensions led to several heated altercations between members of the Polish club and the police present on site. The president and owner of Legia Dariusz Mioduski was reportedly hit in the face. Several staff members were reportedly beaten with batons. Journalists were also reportedly attacked by local police.

Dutch agents then blocked the Polish bus, which was trying to leave the stadium. The players Pankov and Josué were taken from the bus by the police before being handcuffed, as shown in images on social networks. The Serbian defender and the Portuguese midfielder were taken into police custody overnight and would therefore have missed the return flight, scheduled for this Friday morning at ten o’clock in the morning. Warsaw leaders informed the Serbian and Portuguese consulates to try to resolve this tumultuous situation.

According to some Polish media, confrontations had already broken out between police officers and Legia supporters before the start of the match. Some visitors did not respect the ticket collection protocol to attend the match. The latter then appeared without a ticket before confronting the police. A police officer even lost consciousness briefly in these scuffles which led to the use of tear gas.
