Two Men Sentenced to Prison for Murder in Gothenburg

The first trial in the Court of Appeal had to be repeated.

But now two men are being sentenced again for their involvement in the murder of a wheelchair-bound man in Gothenburg in the fall of 2021, reports P4 Gothenburg.

Both men were first sentenced to life imprisonment by the district court. But when the Court of Appeal for Western Sweden took up the case for the first time, they were convicted instead of aiding and abetting murder.

However, it was not covered by the prosecutor’s description of the crime, the Supreme Court held, which gave the Court of Appeal back-breaking and decided that the trial should be retried.

Now the men are sentenced for murder – but to the same punishment as at the first trial in the Court of Appeal, 16 years in prison. According to the Court of Appeal, sentencing to life imprisonment was not possible, due to the first sentence.

– The Court of Appeal was bound by the sentencing from the previous trial, says prosecutor James von Reis to TT.

However, a third man has previously, in both the district court and the court of appeal, been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder. This means that the three men are now sentenced for the same crime, but to different punishments.

– We all probably think it sounds very strange, but I think the Court of Appeal is right about this, says James von Reis.

– It is nothing that I have reason to oppose, but it is an extremely unusual situation.
