Singapore’s strict narcotics laws impose the death penalty for drug trafficking starting with 15 grams of heroin.
The United Nations and human rights groups say there is no evidence that the death penalty is effective in combating drug-related crime. The Singapore government, however, considers the death penalty one of the reasons why Singapore is one of the safest countries in Asia.
Three people have been killed in Singapore since the beginning of the year. According to a count by the AFP news agency, a total of 19 people have been killed since the executions began in 2022. The city suspended the execution of the death penalty for two years during the corona pandemic – but resumed the executions in March 2022.
