In commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Ministry of Health launched the national campaign #PodemosHablar together with public and private entities, unions, educational institutions and community leaders.
This initiative aims to raise awareness and promote dialogue around mental health and suicide prevention in Colombia.
The #PodemosHablar strategy seeks to draw attention to this problem in the country, promote conversation about the factors that can lead a person to consider taking their own life, and provide information about available support mechanisms. The initiative emphasizes that suicide and mental health should not be treated as individual matters, but as collective issues that deserve the attention and commitment of the entire society.

“We need to open the conversation about suicide prevention and mental health in Colombia: it is essential. With the #PodemosHablar campaign we want to invite all Colombians to discuss the factors that make a person think about suicide, and to recognize that this is an issue that affects each and every one of us. We must create an environment of support and understanding for those who face these difficulties,” said the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Dr. Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo.
This initiative is part of the process of updating the Mental Health Public Policy that the Ministry of Health has been working on in various meetings since 2023. This policy, which will be delivered in October 2024, incorporates observations and proposals from meetings in various regions of the country, reflecting the government’s commitment to continuous improvement in the field of mental health.
The campaign also highlights the importance of understanding the differences in the experience of emotional distress between women and men, and how social pressures and gender stereotypes can affect help-seeking.
