The fiercest opponent of President Macky Sall was charged and imprisoned on Monday for various crimes, including the call for an insurrection which caused killings justifying the dissolution of his party.

Two people were killed Monday (July 31st) in southern Senegal, during protests following the indictment and detention of 2024 presidential candidate Ousmane Sonko. The Interior Ministry said “manifestations” erupted in the city of Ziguinchor, where “two lifeless bodies” were discovered, without giving further details on the circumstances.

The fiercest opponent of President Macky Sall had just been charged and imprisoned for various crimes, including the call for an insurrection which caused killings justifying the dissolution of his party. Less than two hours after this indictment, the Minister of the Interior had also announced the dissolution of Ousmane Sonko’s party, the Pastef, justifying his decision by his appeals “frequent” Has “insurgent movements” which, according to him, caused many deaths in March 2021 and June 2023.

The opponent has already been sentenced on June 1 to two years in prison in a morality case, a verdict which makes him ineligible, according to lawyers. His conviction caused the most serious disturbances for years in Senegal, which left 16 dead according to the authorities, around thirty according to the opposition.
