Three people were found alive on Saturday February 18 under the rubble of a collapsed building in Hatay (South), thirteen days after the earthquake which struck Turkey and Syria on February 6, causing the death of more than 40,000 people .
One of these three survivors, however, died within minutes of his rescue, said the private Turkish channel NTV. The other two people, including a child, were transferred to hospital. The ages and identities of the survivors are currently unknown.
The survivors were extracted from the debris by Turkish and Kyrgyz rescue teams, according to Turkish media. Another survivor, a 45-year-old man, was found Friday evening in the province of Hatay, near the Syrian border, which notably houses the city of Antakya, completely ravaged.
The latest official death toll from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria is 39,672. Chances of survival now appear lower around the quake’s epicenter further north, in mountainous regions, such as Kahramanmaras, and even snowy regions of Elbistan and Adiyaman, where the thermometer dropped to -15°C overnight. .
