Two powerful X-class flares have been recorded on the Sun after a series of medium-sized explosions.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to Gazeta.ru, this was reported by the head of the solar astronomy laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sergei Bogachev.

“A continuous barrage of M-class flashes (level four on a five-point scale) led to the start of explosions of the highest, fifth level. <...> Two such events in a row occurred on the Sun today. First, a flare of level X1.7 with a maximum at 16:40 (17:40 Baku time) and just a second event with a peak between 18:30 and 18:50. The preliminary score of the second flare is X1.2,” he said.

According to the scientist, the first explosion was recorded on the western edge of the solar disk, where active centers are located, moving away from the Earth. The second explosion occurred on the eastern edge, where active centers are moving toward our planet.

Bogachev noted that the impact of these flares on the Earth’s magnetosphere is unlikely, since no plasma emissions into space were detected and the explosion sites are too far from the direction of Earth.

However, the eastern regions where the second flare occurred are moving towards the Sun-Earth line and may reach a position from where the Earth may be affected by plasma clouds as early as Wednesday, and by fast particles from Friday-Saturday.

The specialist suggested that the Sun is gradually moving into a permanent activity mode, but due to the location of sunspots, it is difficult to predict when this period will end. He also did not rule out the possibility that low-level X-flares will become a common occurrence every week.

It is important to monitor whether explosions occur in the zones of influence on the Earth, the scientist concluded.
