Two riders from the Wanty development team were run over in Spain – Ciclismo Internacional

Last Tuesday, December 19, two young cyclists from the Wanty-ReUz-Technord team, part of the Intermarché-Circus-Wanty, were involved in a complex traffic accident during their winter training camp in the province of Alicante, Spain.

The riders suffered significant injuries after colliding head-on with a car during a road training session. Both Belgian riders received medical attention at the scene and were later transported to a local hospital, where extensive tests were performed. Despite multiple fractures suffered by Wout Geerinckx, 20, and Obie Vidts, 21, it was reported that there was no damage to internal organs or concussions, which is a relief for the team and their families.

Team doctor Gerald Ackerl released additional details about the athletes’ injuries in an official team statement. According to Ackerl, Geerinckx suffered breaks to his left thigh and right elbow, along with wounds and bruises. After a successful surgical intervention in a hospital in Benidorm, he is expected to return to Belgium to continue his recovery. Vidts, for his part, underwent a successful operation in Herentals to treat multiple fractures in both hands.

Now, they will face a lengthy rehabilitation period, but the team expressed relief that the injuries were not even more serious. The cycling community sends its best wishes to Geerinckx and Vidts for a speedy and complete recovery.
