Proposals for the preparation of the “Water Safety Study” and the “Delimitation of Water Absorption Point Protection Zones”, concerning the protection of the Kryas-Agia Marina, Kranoula and Loggadon pumping stations, were submitted for funding to the EP. “Epirus 2021-2027” the DEVIA.
The preparation of the studies is an obligation for DEYAI in the context of the implementation of the European Directive 2000/60/EC (Water Framework Directive), which was incorporated into national law and in accordance with the 2nd revision of the River Basin Management Plan (RBMP) ) of Epirus, which is the basic tool for achieving the comprehensive protection and rational management of surface and underground water systems.
According to the protection zones and security measures, the corresponding projects and tools will be proposed for the integrated management of the underground water systems of the area and the necessary Special Hydrogeological Environmental studies will be drawn up both for the environmental effects of all the proposed management measures and for the protection of the underground water systems.
The studies in question will be prepared for the first time in the Municipality of Ioannita and will include an area approximately equal to 160 square kilometers, completing critical requirements of the EPIRD for the conservation and protection of the water resource from impacts such as pollution and climate change.
By including the studies to be financed, DEYAI will create the stable framework for the efficient protection and rational management of water resources, pre-qualifying technically and economically the best solutions and projects with a horizon of sustainability and efficiency, with the aim of avoiding the emergency taking of piecemeal and ineffective measures.
The proposal for the “Delimitation of Protection Zones for Hydro Drilling Fields” has a total budget of 1,014,194.09 euros (plus VAT) and the objectives of the study are:
• The determination of the protection zones of each municipal water well.
• Assessment of the vulnerability of each underground aquifer.
• Assessment of pollution reduction mechanisms (attenuation) in the case of accidental pollution.
• The development of an objective system of collecting hydrogeological and hydrological information through extensive chemical and biological analyzes for a sufficient period of time.
• Their processing and utilization through a water resource management model in order to identify problems and trends in the water balance.
• The coordination of the various actions aimed at the rational management of water resources in an area with special characteristics.
• Defining criteria for the demarcation of protection zones, determination of permitted uses and proposals for protection measures.
The “Water Security Plan” has a total budget of 227,165.25 euros (plus VAT) and its objectives are:
• The assessment of the existing water supply system quantitatively and qualitatively, in relation to the statutory limits of the legislation
• The identification of potential risks in each link of the water supply chain, the magnitude of the risk, as well as the appropriate measures that can be identified to mitigate the risk.
• Recording of management arrangements and actions in cases of risk to human health due to unacceptable quality of drinking water.
